Hello all, I did some bitching in another thread about how my PS3 has downloaded stuff from PSN as slowly as molasses ever since I got it in 2008, and go the usual mixed bag of responses--some agreed, others said things were fine. This pretty much mirrors what I see when I google the problem--thousands of posts on forums where people say their PS3s download like crap, and thousands of other responses saying that everything's fine. For me, download speeds have never exceeded about 100KB/sec, and they typically sit around 50-60KB/sec. Doesn't matter whether the PS3 is connected to my router via wireless or wired, or even direct to the cable modem--same result, every time, no matter what. However, I stumbled across this post, which suggested setting up a local proxy (such as Privoxy) on a spare computer on your LAN, and then telling the PS3 to use that proxy to connect to the Internet. I pulled down Privoxy and set it up on my Windows Home Server and set the PS3 to use it, and the difference was instant and incredible. I went from 50-60KB/second to more than 1 MB/second. Upon removing the proxy, my speeds returned to dog-slow. Put the proxy setting back, and the speed returned. So, first off, this is a quick and easy fix, and I'm grateful that it works. To anyone else who suffers very slow PS3 download speeds, give this a shot and see if it helps. Second off, and more importantly, I'm terribly curious about WHY this works. Is the slow speed caused by some of the PS3's code? Is Sony doing it from their end, with something that the proxy server is ignoring? Any ideas? I didn't find the right solution from the internet.
